Review: Facebook Ads Guide
Posted on June 02, 2010 by d3so
Facebook Ads Guide, recently released by Jonathan Volk, is an eBook that teaches you how to setup ads on Facebook. I think it was good time to have such a release because many affiliates feel discouraged to advertise on Facebook due to changes in advertising policies. No worries, in this guide Jonathan explains that it’s definitely still possible for affiliates to advertise and he shows you how. I’ll briefly outline the content within the guide, share positive aspects of it, and how it can be improved.
When you first start reading, you’ll be greeted with a nice introduction of the author, what he’s accomplished, and what you’ll expect to see in the guide. He also explains why Facebook is a great platform to advertise on.
- Advertising, consists of a five-step process. The first being the offer you’re promoting. Jonathan does a nice job of explaining what an offer is, what affiliate networks are, and which networks are the best to join. He goes even further and shares which type of offers he’s found success with. This first section contains basic information all affiliate marketers should already know.
- In the second section, you’ll learn about how to research the demographics for your offer to better target potential customers. Demographics such as gender, age, marital status, income, and education.
- The third section, talks about the structure of an ad. Here you’ll learn what type of images to use (and you WILL use images) and get tips on how to write the headline & body text of an ad.
- Fourth section deals with bidding strategies. You are taught the differences between CPC (Cost-per-click) and CPM (Cost-per-1000 impressions), how to find the EPC (Earnings-per-click) of an offer, and a SUPER-SECRET-SPECIAL technique on how to get a better chance of approval for your ads!
- The fifth section is where you’ll actually start making the ads and setting up campaigns.
- The sixth and final section is where you’ll learn to maximize your earnings. Jonathan lists eight “Upper Hand” techniques to help you excel and make more money!
Aspects of the guide I enjoyed were the use of visuals. This can be of tremendous help for the beginner who’s completely new to Facebook advertising. Almost everything was written simple enough for anyone to understand. Also, the tips & techniques included are a huge plus. I haven’t come across a Facebook guide that discussed strategies such as those presented in this guide. Finally, I thought the guide was very concise. Complex information was simplified enough that you’re able to read the whole thing at one time.
Here are things that could improve the guide. I think it would help if we were instructed more specifically on how many ads to create within a campaign and how many campaigns to create for an offer to do effective testing. Also, I don’t know if it’s just me but the section on split testing kinda confused me. It would’ve been easier to understand if images were used to convey the concept. I asked Jonathan if he had a pull with affiliate networks and could help get us newbies in. He replied stating he no longer does due to scammers. I think if someone paid for his “up-in-price” ebook, it’d prove to show some legitimacy. Anyways, it would’ve been nice to gain immediate access to at least one network instead of waiting days or weeks for approval. It would’ve been equally as nice if a coupon for Facebook Ads were included as a bonus. Though, the bonuses included with the guide are supplemental towards effective targeting.
Overall, this guide is an excellent source of information. Both beginner and experienced marketers can learn from the information and tips discussed. It was nice quick-read, as I don’t enjoy reading ebooks that much (because I need an iPad!!!). Though, I expected more perks and bonuses from an already (seemingly) discounted guide, what you get is well worth the price paid. The value is in what you learn and implement.

Hey! Thanks for the great honest review!
I really appreciate the feedback and will look into how I can improve this guide and will be sending an updated copy ASAP.
The only thing I will probably not be able to do is get access to an affiliate network. See, scammers can make literally THOUSANDS from an account so they would be more than willing to pay $100 or more for an instant account. Sucks that they ruin it for us who make money in legit ways.
Anyways, thanks again for the great review and input! I appreciate you helping me to make the guide better for everyone!

You could always release a version 2.0 of the guide and make more profit, just hook up a free copy for me.
The reason I bring up access to networks is because when I joined the shoemoney system, Jeremy got us exclusive access to azoogle. I've been denied by azoogle in the past and was surprised at how simple getting accepted could be with the help of someone well-known. Nevertheless, I respect your standing.
Thanks for dropping by!

I have used ad campaigns on Facebook before and I have found their instructions to be very helpful. I’m guessing that for me the process was simple but then again I’m in the Ad Biz but I still needed to use FB’s guidelines to get it done…

Hey,
That was an honest review. I am literally devouring the info on Jonathan's blog. I did my first attempt with little or no experience and I just lost money. Well, let's say the money paid for the experience.
Johnathan, I really like your work!! btw, I love videos. Maybe you can release a video version of your course too? especially newbies love to be taken by the hand, step-by-step…
PS. Loved your sales page too! I learned lots from it.

This review is well balanced and really excellent. Too bad I haven't read it earlier.
Perhaps I'd jump on doing a review myself. It will be nice when the updated version comes out. Jonathan said he'd do that didn't he in one of his comments.
I was going to ask you if you implemented what you learned from the ebook but then I got the answer to that from your reply to another commentator.
FB advertising seems to work for some people but not having advertised anywhere I could hardly judge the results if I were to try it on FB.
