The Secrets to Blog Commenting
Posted on July 09, 2010 by d3so
You’ve probably read countless articles on the importance of commenting on blogs, but from what I’ve observed none teach how to do it effectively. First off, “why would we want to comment on other blogs?” you might ask. When you leave a comment you are exposing & promoting yourself and your blog/business. Commenting can increase traffic to your blog and increase your readership which can turn into increased profits in the end. Listed below are my Secrets of Blog Commenting.
1. Leave Meaningful, Responsive, and Insightful Comments.

In a nutshell, don’t SPAM! You’ll do yourself more harm than good if you spam. When commenting you always want to attract the attention of other readers in a positive manner. We’ve either all seen or left a “thanks for this post” type comment. What you can do to make this more meaningful is to state which piece(s) of information helped you or found interesting. Be responsive and insightful by answering questions the author or other readers ask.
2. Comment and Comment Often.
Don’t just leave a comment and disappear forever. By leaving comments consistently and on a regular basis, you’ll establish yourself with other readers and commentators. You’ll stick out like a sore thumb and will be hard to ignore. People will start responding to your comments and you’ll notice an increase of activity on your own blog, guaranteed!
3. Be the First to Comment.
To help in you in your attempts to be the first to comment, you should subscribe to the blog’s RSS feed, follow the author(s) on Facebook & Twitter, and visit the blog often. You want to be the first to comment because most readers only look at the first few comments. If you see zero comments on a post, don’t just scroll down and quickly leave a comment. Be sure to always apply secret number one. If the post is lengthy, read the first sentence of each paragraph to get a good feel of what the post is about. Being the first to comment will give you huge exposure given that you’ve written something worth reading.
4. Be a Top Commentator.
Given you’ve followed all of the previous secrets; you’ll eventually reach Top Commentator stardom. That is only if the blog you’re commenting on uses the Top Commentator plugin, and you do want to comment on a blog that uses it. Why? Because you get additional traffic and exposure, plus you get link juice (that’s if the links are set to do-follow, which it is most of the time).
5. Comment on Popular Blogs with Large Readerships.
It’s pretty obvious that you don’t want to invest time commenting on an inactive blog. Find the top bloggers in your niche by searching on Google or by joining blog networks such as MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog. Once you’ve done that, start your comment spree! It’s all about the law of attraction. Associate yourself with those at the top and you’ll find yourself there too in no time!
If you follow my Secrets to Blog Commenting, I can guarantee you’ll see results. It’s all up to you on what you write on other people’s blogs, and whatever lies behind that link on your profile should exceed the quality of your comments. Get started commenting today! You can start by leaving comments here

Hey d3so,
Your post gives good points on commenting. I enjoyed reading it. You are close to being top commentator or the top commentator on John Chow's blog.
It seems like a battle there for the top spot.
I would add to what you wrote in your post that commenting on blogs that are dofollow and have Comment Luv and Keyword Luv is a big help too.
My blog has all of those.
You don't always need to be among the top commentators and get dofollow links. Plus with blogs that have Keyword Luv you get the anchor text as well.

Why hasn't your blog got the Top Commentators plugin though? Is there any particular reason? It is a definite guarantee of more traffic, but loads more spam is guaranteed too, I suppose….

I used to have the top commentator plug in too. A couple of months ago my top commentator was hijacked by a spammer who placed links to a porn site there instead.
Luckily I caught it within a few days. That was the reason I got rid of the plug in.
Since then I read a few articles on how the chance of having any of your top commentators hijacked can be made much smaller.
I will most likely use that information and install the top commentator plug in again.
In the meantime everybody who places good comments is getting do follow, links with comment luv and keyword luv.

I agree wholeheartedly. Commenting is great fun and you'll get to know a lot of other bloggers as well.
I have a question about the July competition. Who was the top commenter on your blog?
Do you reset the top commentator on your blog once a month or how often?
Are you still sending the winner the prize or have you changed that?

I went over the comments left in July, I believe you were the top commentator but the number of comments didn't meet the reserve of 30 when I excluded the comments that violated the contest rules.
I'm not sure if i'll extend the contest to this month, August.

By participating and posting blog comments regularly, the readers of those blogs that you frequent would come to recognize you as a subject expert. Frequent appearances can do much good to your credibility.

I think it gets written about too much, it just calmed down. The most articles don't go in-depth as how to comment effectively.

Your "rules" 2, 4, and 5 can't be emphasized enough. I will say that aiming to be number 1 on someone's top commentator list is always a temptation that should be avoided. It's much better to leave quality comments (as you've emphasized) than to spam someone you think you're helping out.

Blogs are loved by many because of their interactive nature, so the more lively and interesting the comment section, the better the blog.

In regards to being the first to comment, there used to be software or some program that told you when a blog published a new post that you already commented on. It was sort of like advanced rss.
btw,
I just installed a do follow top commentators widget on MSB that shows commentators picture so don't be shy

The problem with leaving insightful comments is that some will take your comments the wrong way. Most do not take criticism properly and instead flame the commenter for being a "hater." So if I say I agree with what you posted when I don't can I still get my message across? I am too going to start a blog up for my ramblings and will take your advice into account.
Thanks for the info.

No problem. You should always share you opinions even if they are against the authors. But do so in a professional & respectable manner.

The secret on blog commenting is you have to know your niche, keyword research, what to aim, get the solutions to that topic and make friends with that community.

Your advice is right on the money.
It still amazes me at how many people say they want something from life–yet do nothing to move towards their goal. Or, maybe it's our want-it-right-now-society.
Hard work and sincerity will always pay BIG dividends in the long run.
