Win $5 for Being Top Commentator

Posted on May 25, 2010 by d3so

Peerfly

Would you like to win an easy $5 every month? All you have to do is comment on my blog, and comment often.

Of course, there’s always a catch.

  1. No Spamming!
  2. No double/multiple posting.
  3. Leave responsive, well-written, insightful comments. (NOT, “oh cool”, “very interesting”, etc.)
  4. A reserve of 30 total comments from all readers must be met. (Meaning, if there’s 24 comments total from all readers, then the prize cannot be given away)
  5. Winner will receive $5 via PayPal at the end of the month.

Rules are subject to change as I see fit.

I’m doing this to increase the activity on my blog. I’ve been looking at my site statistics and I’ve seen that people read my articles but very few leave comments. I know we all have our opinions, I would like to reward my visitors for sharing them.

I know that five dollars isn’t much but it’s what I could afford to give at this time. As my blogging income increases, the prize amount will increase as well. :)

Is there anything I can do to make the contest experience any better? Are there more rules I should add? What do you think?

    D3so,

Cool idea! I'm also trying to get more comments on my blog. Lots of folks reading, but not as many commenting. One thing I need to do is give links to my top commentors on my homepage, something that I think will increase comments quite a bit.

    All the best,

    Ian

Have you guys considered Kyword Luv plug in with a dofollow?

That should attract more people to leaving a comment.

Getting your page rank higher and letting your visitors know about it would probably be a good way to get more comments.

Are you paying $5 for everyone who gets on Top Commentators or just the person who's #1 or on top? Right now I see Derek as the top commentator.

@PPC Ian, if you install Top Commentators on your blog I will definitely leave relevant and useful comments on your blog.

I'm definitely going to get the top commentors up on my site. Might take some time (I need to work with Unique Blog Designs to get them to integrate it into the look/feel of my blog) but it will happen. I appreciate your comment. It definitely helps me prioritize this higher on my list!

uhhh you know that the top commentators thing is a plugin you can install for free? No need to order a custom blog for that lol!

@Dino he was talking about getting the plugin to match with his custom
theme and I guess it takes knowledge of the coding to get that done.

D3so, you updated the look of your website and I think it's for the better. I like the this blue header more than the old black one. It's a small change but it makes a big difference.

Nope, I'm actually disapponted. By looking at other blogs using thesis, I thought it'd be easy making a blog look cool. It turns out you have to code to get a useful features :(

^^^ Naw I say scrap it. Reason because a lot of people use Thesis for their themes and honestly unless you code it a lot and add to it, its pretty basic. Thats my opinion on it…

Hey D3so, I've been busy writing for my sports blog and haven't been on the site recently. The traffic exploded in the past 2 weeks, so I've been trying to keep with the demand. I do like the new theme but it looks a bit plain.

    Hey d3so,
I'm not sure if bribing people to comment will work but I have to give you points for trying it.

$5 to the top commentator is better than nothing but not enough for most people to bother. I think what works better is using Comment Luv and Keyword Luv and rewarding people with dofollow links.

I'm a bit puzzled with the 30 total comments in order for you to pay out the prize. That's imposing a condition that the top commentator has nøthing to do with.

But it's your blog and you can do what you want.

    Reply:

Bribing isn't the proper word. Incentive is ;) $5 is $5. And I've seen an increase in comments and I've already paid out to the Top Commentator.
The 30 total comments is to encourage more commenting.
It's worked for me. It's all about testing and seeing what works ;)

I used to have 10 Top Commentator (commenters). Usually people have more than 5.

I got rid of the plug in because I thought one of the top commentators was hijacked. I since learned that it wasn't the case but that person kind of hijacked themselves. What I mean is that They replaced their usual blog with a link to a sex site.

It pays to keep clicking on the top commentors links once in a while to see if they still lead to the regular site.

I did that by accident and I was horrified to find out that that link that used to lead to a personal blog now lead to a sex site. I didn't want to have my blog associated with that kind of neighborhood, didn't know what was going on so I deleted the plug in.

I'm now thinking of installing the top C. plugin again but I'll be extra careful with it.

Nice idea about giving out $5 for being the top commentator. But I must admit that while getting $5 is a fun thing, something else you could be doing is removing the "nofollow" in comments and thus rewarding the commentator even more.

I read about a plugin that removed the "nofollow" once the commentator had made at least 3 comments. Can't remember where though.

    d3so

    Reply:

That's a neat feature. Dofollow after 3 comments. The top commentator links are do-follow by the way. I removed the no-follow.
